Prof. Dr. Ara Altun was born in Istanbul in 1945. After graduating from the Department of Art History in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University in 1969, he completed his doctoral degree in 1972 at his alma mater. He became an Associate Professor in 1982 and received the title of Professor in 1989. Prof. Altun served as the Chair of the Department of Art History in the Faculty of Letters and the Chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Istanbul University. He has participated in various national and international conferences and symposiums at which he presented his papers. Prof. Dr. Altun has published numerous books and articles on Turkish Art History.
